School is an independent, co-educational university preparatory day school
known for its strong academic program, selective admissions, high college
matriculation and well known parents and alumni. As Dow Diversified's exclusive
millwork subcontractor, SMI Millwork was contracted for this challenging high
profile project to provide an extensive interior millwork package for the Bing
Auditorium.
Referred to as the Sails, these tall iconic millwork
structures positioned at both sides of the stage and lining the main stair
entries at either side of the auditorium posed many unique challenges with
their large radius panels trimmed out with hardwood reveals, all in horizontal
alignment with their adjacent counterparts while arrayed at gradient
elevations. These panels which are all sequence matched, trim and solid wood
end caps are affixed to an internal steel structure and are custom fit to each
elevation. The Sails are further complimented by the Canopy, suspended 30 feet
above the theatrical stage and orchestra pit. It follows the same design with
sequence matched radius veneer panels and hardwood edges.
A prelude to
the Bing Auditorium millwork is the Reception Desk and Wall Panels inside the
Front Office. This tear drop shaped fixture is fabricated with radius veneer
panels affixed over a skeletal wood frame with a granite countertop contoured
to match.
